Caravan to Turkey: Cugnasco CH

Monday, 6 May 2013 at 13:58

Cugnasco campsite, southern Switzerland

They speak Italian here...Switzerland confuses me somewhat....

Arrived at the campsite about midday..no queue at the Gotthard tunnel.....God, I hate towing in long tunnels. Still, if it's got to be done, this rig is the thing to have I think. (View from 'the office' below...)

Thought about continuing to Bologna as the weather looked wet but glad we didn't as, after siting the 'van and shopping at a local Swiss Coop, we headed the Treg into Locarno...and what a great little town it is. Took the funicular railway up to the Madonna del Sasso which has a breathtaking view over the lake and town.

Finish the visit by taking a coffee in the Paizza Grande....wonderful.

Will stay another day here and visit Bellinzona...Sue has really researched the places to see....

Day 2

Drive into Bellinzona, town at the foot of three mountain passes....this accounts for it's strategic position and hence three famous World Heritage castles. We visit the oldest, Castelgrande.  Helpful lady puts on a filmshow in English just for us. Very interesting and remarkably well preserved (the Castle)....there again, so too has been everything we have visited in Switzerland.

Lunch in a restaurant in the Piazza della Stefano, after which we walk around the town and then pop into the amazing Colegiata dei Santi Pietro e Stefana (Italian ..see), an imposing church with an astoundingly rich Baroque interior....quite a find.

Return 'home' and write this up in a thunderstorm.

Bologna tomorrow
